Who are we? What are we up to?

You may well have heard that due to the large amount of restoration work required to make St. James Church safe, it was questionable as to whether or not it was worth keeping the church functioning.

Following a meeting at the community centre in 2005, chaired by Rev. Mike Shepherd, St. James's Restoration Fund was formed with the sole purpose of raising enough finance quickly enough to save the church from closure.

The paperwork was raised to formally register the organisation as a Charity. It was believed that if we could raise in excess of £10,000 before June 2006, we would be in a position to apply for grant aid to carry out the most urgent repairs that are required.

The group have met regularly organising numerous events with others being arranged by Villagers wishing to support the Trusts objectives.

The fundraising plans are well under way, and our initial Target of £10,000 by June 2006 was beaten by £1000 this allowed the church and Trust to commission the measurement work needed this was initiated at the beginning of the summer. Subsequently grant aid was applied for but was not approved as there was no detail of the exact restoration work to be undertaken. The application will be reprocessed as soon as the extent and exact cost of works can be quantified.

Meanwhile we will continue with the fundraising efforts which are reflected in the indicator - setting ourselves the target of £ 10,000 per year. The current total is approximately £20,000 at the end of January 2008 as some fairly large amounts were spent on monitoring movement in the structure of the church during 2007. Details of forthcoming activities can be found on our events page and we hope that everyone in the village will find an event that they will enjoy taking part in.

The task of raising the finance will not be easy, but with the support of the villagers, we are confident that the target will be achieved, and our aim is to have fun and involve the whole community in different events.

There are four Trustees of the charity: David Sykes, Andrée Carter, Wilson Boardman and Mathew Turner.

In addition, there is a hard-working team who will be ensuring that our events run according to plan. If you would like to become involved in any way whatsoever, please do not hesitate to contact us on 01664 823097 or by direct e-mail to this site.
